What is the typical input voltage range for LED Drivers?They generally operate at 220–240 V (with ±10% tolerance, i.e. 198–264 Vac). At Osram, there are also special series with 120–277 V input voltage.What is the warranty period for LED Drivers?In general, 3- and 5-year warranty periods are available. At Osram, products are usually offered with a 5-year warranty, but specifically:- 3 years for Element series- 8 years for DALI/FIT IND industrial-type series- If Osram module and profile are used, a warranty of up to 10 years can be provided.- For Osram drivers, there is an option to extend the warranty period for an additional fee.What does Flicker-Free mean? Which products are Flicker-Free?The literal meaning of flicker is vibration. Light flickering in lighting fixtures is referred to as photometric flicker. Photometric Flicker can be defined as the instantaneous change in light intensity from the light source. Photometric Flicker affects our health, and in the long term it is known to impact visual performance and comfort, trigger migraines, and cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea.Until recently, lighting engineers did not pay much attention to the flicker effect. However, its inclusion in health and safety regulations and complaints from employees working in offices illuminated by fluorescent tubes have led to action on this issue.Flicker-Free means that the ripple value is less than 5%. At Osram, 95% of the OT FIT and IT FIT series are Flicker-Free. Constant Current Element S series are not Flicker-Free. However, the newly released Compact Element G3 series are Flicker-Free products.What types of DALI-enabled drivers are there?1- Products with PMD feature2- Products with TouchDIM and Corridor Function3- Economic-type ETI DALI series drivers that do not have the above features other than DALIWhat is Touch DIM and what is it used for?It is a manual dimming system using a simple push button. Osram Push Button products also feature Memory (by double short press).What is the Corridor Function?It is a feature of DALI drivers that provides energy savings by operating with standard occupancy sensors (sensors available on the market) or staircase timers. The operating principle is that when there is no movement, the driver dims to save energy, and when movement is detected again, it exits dimming and returns to its initial state.With the factory setting, it will operate as follows;Zone I ➔ Operating zone when there is movement, the driver operates at 100% level. (A)Zone II ➔ No movement, continues to operate at 100% for 120 s (D0).Zone III ➔ Dimming zone, it is reduced to 10% within 32 s (F1). (B)Zone IV ➔ Stand-by zone, it will remain at 10% until movement is detected again.With DALI Magis, the duration and the percentage level in the above steps can be programmed.Note: When used with factory settings, the driver never goes to OFF position, but if programmed with DALI Magic, the time to go to OFF can also be set. The most widely used dimming features are DALI DIM, 0–10 V & 1–10 V DIM and Astro DIM.DALI Dimming FeatureDALI: Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. DALI is an international communication standard. The system simply consists of a user interface, processor, DALI driver and LED module.Advantages:• Every LED driver in the system can be addressed.• In this way, the luminaires in the system can be controlled independently or in groups.• Operation of the luminaires (dim levels, operating hours, energy consumption, etc.) can be monitored via the system.• Desired lighting scenarios can be implemented to provide comfort and energy savings.• With motion and light sensors used in the system, by dimming the luminaires, not only energy savings are achieved but the lifetime of the LED modules is also significantly extended.• DALI components work compatibly with each other regardless of brand.1–10 V and 0–10 V Dimming FeatureIt is a lighting control system in which a potentiometer or controller is connected to the 1–10 V (or 0–10 V) signal terminals of the LED driver. Here, the 1–10 V signal voltage is generated by the LED driver, and the potentiometer controls it. At 10 V signal, the LED module operates at maximum level (100%), and at 1 V at minimum level (10%). With 0–10 V, dimming below 10% is possible.Astro DIM FeatureThanks to the integrated counter, it is possible to perform 5 independent stages of automatic dimming without the need for an additional control line or automation.AstroDIM can also be used together with a motion sensor.It has the ability to be programmed automatically according to sunrise and sunset times defined by location.How is the current setting done on drivers?FOR INDOOR PRODUCTSFor those with the LT2 code at the end, current setting is done using an external resistor.For those with the NFC code at the end, a program is prepared on a PC using the free Osram Tuner4Tronic software, and the prepared program is transferred from the PC to the driver with an external NFC device (PRH101USB or CPR30-USB).FOR OUTDOOR PRODUCTSFor products with DALI feature, a program is prepared on a PC using the free Osram Tuner4Tronic software, and the prepared program is transferred from the PC to the driver with an external DALI MAGIC device.For products with NFC feature, a program is prepared on a PC using the free Osram Tuner4Tronic software, and the prepared program is transferred from the PC to the driver with an external NFC device (PRH101USB or CPR30-USB).For drivers that do not have DALI or NFC features, current setting is done with an OT Programmer or a potentiometer. The product datasheets indicate with which product this can be done.What is Power Factor (PF)?It is the ratio of real power to apparent power. In LED drivers supplied from the AC mains, it is formed by the phase shift between current and voltage. As the power factor value approaches 1, power losses in the system will decrease. In OSRAM LED drivers, the power factor is above 0.95.
What is Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)?THD: Total Harmonic Distortion. Under normal conditions, current and voltage on the mains are in sine wave form. Harmonics are distortions that occur in this wave. LED drivers generate harmonics due to AC-DC rectification and DC-DC conversion. As the number of LED drivers in the system increases, the THD values of these drivers become more important. These harmonics in the system cause damage both to the mains and to the connected devices (communication failures in automation, electronic board failures, compensation problems, etc.). In LED drivers, THD value is reduced with filters.In Osram LED drivers, the THD value is in the <5% and <20% range.What do the definitions SELV and Non-SELV mean?SELV: Safety Extra Low Voltage, and LED drivers with an output voltage of DC ≤ 60 V fall into this category. They can be used in both Class I and Class II luminaires without any additional measures. They are generally used with parallel-connected LED modules.Basic Insulation: Single-layer protection against electric shockSupplementary Insulation: A separate insulation that provides protection against faults in the systemReinforced/Double Insulation: A type of insulation where basic and supplementary insulation are combined.Non-SELV: LED drivers in which there is no insulation between the input (primary) and output (secondary) circuits. There is only insulation between the electronic board and the driver housing. Drivers with an output voltage of DC > 60 V fall into this category. By design they are Class I, but they can be used in both Class I and Class II luminaires. To use them in a Class II luminaire, additional insulation must be applied when mounting the driver into the luminaire. Non-SELV LED drivers are generally used with series-connected LED modules.What is Surge Protection (ESD)?Surge Protection: For LED technology to be economical, the LED module and driver must be protected from early failures and reach their intended service life. Unlike mercury vapor lamps, LEDs are designed only for low operating voltages and are therefore sensitive to high voltage. In practice, it has been observed that LEDs cannot withstand high voltages occurring during operation without protection. For this reason, protection is a fundamental feature for LED systems. LED lighting manufacturers generally design their LED drivers for high voltages between 2–4 kV. While this value may be sufficient for indoor lighting, it is inadequate for road lighting.High voltage is a significant increase in the system voltage during operation. The main causes of this are lightning strikes near or directly on the system, or load changes in power transmission lines.Osram has products protected up to 10 kV high voltage. Especially for Outdoor Lighting products, there are specially manufactured IND series products with protection up to 6–10 kV, and for Indoor Lighting products, up to 4 kV for industrial applications. In addition, Osram also offers external Surge Protection products providing protection up to 15 kV.
