Which products are Flicker-Free?The literal meaning of flicker is vibration. Light flickering in lighting fixtures is referred to as photometric flicker. Photometric Flicker can be defined as the instantaneous change in light intensity from the light source. Photometric Flicker affects our health, and in the long term it is known to impact visual performance and comfort, trigger migraines, and cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea.Until recently, lighting engineers did not pay much attention to the flicker effect. However, its inclusion in health and safety regulations and complaints from employees working in offices illuminated by fluorescent tubes have led to action on this issue.Flicker-Free means that the ripple value is less than 5%. At Osram, 95% of the OT FIT and IT FIT series are Flicker-Free. Constant Current Element S series are not Flicker-Free. What is Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)?THD: Total Harmonic Distortion. Under normal conditions, current and voltage on the mains are in sine wave form. Harmonics are distortions that occur in this wave. LED drivers generate harmonics due to AC-DC rectification and DC-DC conversion. As the number of LED drivers in the system increases, the THD values of these drivers become more important. These harmonics in the system cause damage both to the mains and to the connected devices (communication failures in automation, electronic board failures, compensation problems, etc.). In LED drivers, THD value is reduced with filters.In Osram LED drivers, the THD value is in the <5% and <20% range.What do the definitions SELV and Non-SELV mean?SELV: Safety Extra Low Voltage, and LED drivers with an output voltage of DC ≤ 60 V fall into this category. They can be used in both Class I and Class II luminaires without any additional measures. They are generally used with parallel-connected LED modules.Basic Insulation: Single-layer protection against electric shockSupplementary Insulation: A separate insulation that provides protection against faults in the systemReinforced/Double Insulation: A type of insulation where basic and supplementary insulation are combined.Non-SELV: LED drivers in which there is no insulation between the input (primary) and output (secondary) circuits. There is only insulation between the electronic board and the driver housing. Drivers with an output voltage of DC > 60 V fall into this category. By design they are Class I, but they can be used in both Class I and Class II luminaires. To use them in a Class II luminaire, additional insulation must be applied when mounting the driver into the luminaire. Non-SELV LED drivers are generally used with series-connected LED modules.What is Surge Protection (ESD)?Surge Protection: For LED technology to be economical, the LED module and driver must be protected from early failures and reach their intended service life. Unlike mercury vapor lamps, LEDs are designed only for low operating voltages and are therefore sensitive to high voltage. In practice, it has been observed that LEDs cannot withstand high voltages occurring during operation without protection. For this reason, protection is a fundamental feature for LED systems. LED lighting manufacturers generally design their LED drivers for high voltages between 2–4 kV. While this value may be sufficient for indoor lighting, it is inadequate for road lighting.High voltage is a significant increase in the system voltage during operation. The main causes of this are lightning strikes near or directly on the system, or load changes in power transmission lines.Osram has products protected up to 10 kV high voltage. Especially for Outdoor Lighting products, there are specially manufactured IND series products with protection up to 6–10 kV, and for Indoor Lighting products, up to 4 kV for industrial applications. In addition, Osram also offers external Surge Protection products providing protection up to 15 kV.
